Course Description

This course traces some of the main steps in the remarkable journey of the English language. We set off with its prehistory in ancient Europe, pass through the conquests of the Middle Ages, witness its rapid development in the Renaissance, and run right through to the present day, where Germany has more English speakers than Australia, where only a Canadian thinks “Tire Centre” is spelled correctly, and where Twitter provides a unique new view into how we use the language.
